Flare gas monitoring
Business Unit: Process Analysis
The discharge of process gases into a flare is required in many chemical and petrochemical plants to limit the direct emission of flammable, explosive, and toxic components into the atmosphere. When the gas is not discharged into a flare, it is essential that it is flushed with inert gas to prevent oxygen (air) from entering the pipe, which could generate a source of ignition in the presence of flammable and explosive gases.
Opportunities
O2 torch monitoring prevents this risk by checking that oxygen does not back-diffuse from the top of the torch. Although this measure is generally implemented before the combustible gas is released, the O2 analyzer must also be able to operate in the presence of hydrocarbon components, H2, or CO, and must guarantee a very high response speed as well as reliability consistent with SIL requirements.

During the release phase, total sulfur monitoring is often required to determine the SO2 pollutant factor resulting from combustion.

LaserGas™ III SP is the third-generation in-situ analyzer designed for safety applications with a focus on SIL and Ex-d applications. It is a compact and easy-to-install instrument. The instrument is enclosed in a sealed housing that eliminates the need for purging the instrument and requires no regular maintenance.
The monitor is mounted directly on the flanges, which include connections for purge gas and a tilt mechanism for easy alignment. Continuous purge flow prevents dust and other contaminants from settling on the optical windows. Once the power and data lines are connected, measurements are performed in real time.
Total Sulfur Analyzer based on PUVF technology for measuring sulfur content in hydrocarbon products. The presence of a 1100°C pyrolyzer ensures complete oxidation of all sulfur compounds, converting them into SO2, which is then measured by a UV fluorescence photometer.
